Day 3 - Garden Bliss

I came across this photo from our trip to Santa Fe. It's Hector & Mattie waiting for me while I was gallery hopping.

There is something about the expression on Mattie's face. I know, it's all about the DOG!  For today's challenge, I decided to feature Mattie in her element. Here it is--a moment of garden bliss.
I will add more "garden" to this later. I like the freedom of cloth & scissors...it is liberating!

Day 2 - Fetch!

I had so much fun making Mattie's nest. Here it is ready to stitch.

For today's challenge, I am taking on gesture & movement. Australian Shepherds need to work. Usually, Mattie is a sleepy girl in the morning. Often we get up and tiptoe out the room... don't want to wake the DOG. That is, until I taught her to fetch the newspaper. Oh, there is nothing like an Aussie with a mission. She can barely wait for me to open the door. Then she launches herself off the porch, runs down the driveway and pounces on the newspaper. It is pure joy to see her! What happens next is, umm, destruction. I am still working the kinks out of this training routine. Mattie will toss the paper up, catch it, and then she shakes it vigorously. Eventually she trots up the driveway, into the house and drops it just short of her bowl. That is how Mattie earns her breakfast.

Here is my sketch called FETCH! Movement and expression--not easy! This little piece of art is going to take awhile. I think I captured the wide-eyed crazy look.

The Queen Mum

What? It’s Tuesday? Darn! Today is DAY 1 of my 5 day challenge. And even though I have already lost the light of day, I do have a little piece of art to show. I’m calling this “Mattie’s Nest”. Mattie is just a paper cutout but soon she will be fabric, full of life and curious moments like this one.

I spent the last two days in a whirlwind of bittersweet moments as I said goodbye to my Mom. I always like to pack as many of her favorite activities into the last 2 weeks of her summer visit with me. Today she flew back to her winter home with my sister. Some of the highlights: going to our favorite opera, La Traviata, shopping for yarn in the most gorgeous colors, our big family birthday party, & eating sushi 3 times in 2 weeks!!! My mom loves sushi so much and I love to see her enjoy it. I hate saying goodbye at the airport, but we made it fun. She wore her magic ring that lights up and flashes. As I pushed her past the long lines at the airport, she, with my prompting, did the queens wave. She is a very good sport at age 96. Bye mom--see you in 2 months.

I will return to Mattie’s Nest when I see can see all the glorious colors in the light of day...

blog party!

Oh my goodness-- I am so tempted to drop everything this very moment...and play with fabric! I just watched Carrie Bloomston's new DVD: Art Techniques for Quilt Design. I am inspired! And if it wasn't for the looming deadlines, I truly would declare TODAY a play with fabric day and make art.

I have this idea to incorporate Carrie's wisdom and artistic freedom into a daily exercise. It should not take much time at all. Start with a little warm up, choose a source of inspiration and execute a little piece of art each day. I can do this. Drawing from Carrie's expert instruction, her confidence building techniques, and most of all, her permission to let my inner artist come out and PLAY. Yup, sometimes it takes a gentle nudge to find or shall I say make time to spend in the moment. Carrie reminds me--creating art is just so much fun!

I usually operate from an ‘all or nothing’ stance, meaning I can't start anything unless I have a huge chunk of free time. Really? Who has that kind of time? The time is NOW! And with this new found inspiration, I must take that leap away from ‘all or nothing’. Little bits of art each day is so much better than thinking about what I will make when I have the gift of free time. That is a liberating thought.

So here is my challenge: Will you join me in my streak? For the next 5 days I will allow myself time to make a little art piece. It’s only 5 days.

I am taking part in this blog party to celebrate Carrie's new DVD. If you would please go to Carrie's site:

and leave a comment, I would feel the love and not be alone in stepping out of my comfort zone. AND you have a chance to win your very own copy of Carrie’s new DVD!
Okay, so thank you.
I will show you today's little piece of art tomorrow. Promise.

Let the COLORS, fabric and artistic magic begin!

hello there!

I just read Carrie Bloomston’s post “Believe in Yourself.” What a boost!
I have been thinking about starting my blog for so long now, it’s ridiculous.
I have been blogging in the form of… ahem…email. That’s right. That place you go to and hit delete, delete, delete! I have lots to say, and I’m just so happy to be here, finally.
